Oh Myyyy

Out of all the celebrities boldly exploring the realm of social and digital media in attempt to reap the benefits, George Takei is going where no man has gone before.

True to the adventurous nature of his famed character Lieutenant Sulu from the original season of Star Trek, Mr. Takei has never been afraid to try new and entertaining ways to maintain relevance and a dedicated fan base across these many years.

From cartoons about his life with hubby Brad to tireless social justice work to a new musical on Broadway, George Takei’s game is as strong as ever today. Most recently, he unveiled an SNL-style digital short to promote his new play, Allegiance, and he hit the nail on the head by taking the Adele route.

The Journey

Not many people have lived through half the experiences that George Takei has. Born the son of Japanese-American parents in 1937, Sinophobia and Yellow Peril resulting from WWII did not make life easy for the young Takei, who was forced to live in several Japanese internment camps with his family until the war was over.

For years, Takei has used his personal experience as a Japanese-American victim of racism and prejudice to become a voice for many others. While his American experiment has not been typical, it has helped him rise to the top and maintain his fame through a new generation via social media.

Uncle George recently opened Allegiance, a new musical on Broadway, his legacy project about the trials and tribulations of a Japanese-American family from Japanese internment to Pearl Harbor to present day.

“Adele-icate Situation”

The title alone should prepare us for the type of digital short that only the masterfully punny George Takei himself could conceive. Known far and wide on the internet for his clever wordplay and encyclopedic knowledge of memes, Takei brings levity and humor to all situations.

In order to promote Allegiance, Takei pulled out all the stops by taking a brake from traditional Broadway ads and riding the Adele train instead. Since the record-breaking release of her album 25, Adele has been the topic of everyone’s conversations, including some very funny SNL material that you probably heard mentioned at your table at least once this Thanksgiving.

Filled to the brim with amazing references to all the buzzy topics of today — from Syrian refugees to Donald Trump — Saturday Night Live put out the skit “A Thanksgiving Miracle” that shows a table filled with clueless bigots that may just resemble a certain relative (or four) of yours.

The solution to silence the painfully racist and uninformed Thanksgiving table topics? Adele! If you haven’t already seen this skit, you have to check it out.

Cleverly choosing to use Adele as a vehicle for laughter, George Takei and his team made this digital short in the style of an SNL skit. It casually promotes Allegiance while bringing us the humor and wit that Takei fans know and love. I have to admit that I’m among the many who thought that this video was made by SNL!

This guy is such a character. If you haven’t watch his ad already, be sure to watch it here, then SHARE and spread the word about Allegiance, Takei’s new Broadway hit.
